Mathematics the Playway: Learning with Joy
Mathematics is often viewed solely as numbers, formulas, and rules, but in our school, we believe that children learn best when they are engaged, curious, and joyful. That is why, in Classes 5 to 8, we follow the play way method of teaching concepts of certain topics, where they are explored hands on rather than memorized mechanically.
Our school is equipped with a well designed Mathematics Lab, furnished with a wide range of resources such as 3 D shapes, fraction circles, counters, geo boards, decimal blocks, tangrams, and special kits to explore concepts like the Pythagoras theorem and angle sum property etc. These hands on tools make abstract concepts concrete and interesting for learners.
In Classes 5 and 6, Prime Numbers are introduced using number charts and coloured counters. Students mark prime and composite numbers in different colors.
Fractions come alive with the help of fraction bars and circle cutouts, e.g. When children place a ½ bar next to a ¼ bar, or arrange three 1/3 pieces in to a whole, they understand fractions as real and comparable parts of a whole.
In Class 6, the concept of Integers is introduced through drawings, number lines and counters, helping children visualize positive and negative numbers. This playful approach makes understanding of abstract ideas simple.
Geometry too is explored playfully students prove angle properties and triangle theorems by cutting and pasting paper shapes. Instead of memorizing, they discover the rules themselves. Mensuration becomes exciting as 3D models of cubes, cones, and cylinders are used to explain surface area and volume. Children hold, compare, and even create their own models; experiencing formulas come alive in their hands.
Students also derive important formulas through activities. For example, the area of a circle is discovered by cutting it into sectors and rearranging them, while the areas of parallelograms and trapeziums are explored using cutouts, step by step building their understanding of geometry.
These activities make learning mathematics a joyful journey. Students participate enthusiastically and share ideas freely.
By adopting the playway method and utilizing our well equipped Maths Lab, we nurture curiosity, creativity, and confidence in every child. For our students, Mathematics is no longer a subject to fear it has become a subject to love.
